Waupaca County ARES sponsored Fox Hunt

Our next fox hunt is planned for early May 2008. Date, time and location will be posted here when it is locked in.

What is a Fox Hunt?

In amateur radio (and CB) a fox hunt is a challenge to find a hidden transmitter.
The transmitter (fox) sends a signal at intervals and the hunter (radio buff) tries to track it down and find it using signal strength.

Although this is "fun and games" it has some very serious practical uses. A person that is lost in the wilderness (or desert) that has a two way radio (CB, FRS/GMRS, walkie-talkie, ham radio...) and has made contact with another station but can not give any helpful direction to rescuers can be located and rescued using this technique. The same technique is used with sophisticated equipment to track and locate a distress beacon being transmitted by a disabled ship/boat or even a downed aircraft. The most common application in our neighborhood would be to find a lost person that has a radio with them.

All interested persons are welcome to join us. You do not have to be a licensed ham operator... we will pair you with an operator for the experience. After meeting us, if you think you would want to become an operator, we will help you get licensed.
If you are a licensed operator living in Waupaca County and want to join our group, this is a good time to meet us and find out more.

We have decided to do this on a regular basis. Bookmark this page and check back often for the next scheduled hunt.
